I love Autumn. The fall. The season of extraordinary color. And the flannels and jeans and pumpkin spice lattes and sweaters and apple picking and pumpkin pies and the decorating color palettes and (my list goes on a while).
The word origin comes from Latin and can mean “increase” or “drying up season”. I think we can all agree it really means “weeping summer is over but yay for hot cider and yay it’s almost time for Christmas”, but maybe in not so many words.
It’s the season you call babies Pumpkin.
“Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.”
― Albert Camus
“I would rather sit on a pumpkin, and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion.”
― Henry David Thoreau
“No spring nor summer beauty hath such grace as I have seen in one autumnal face.”
― John Donne
“Autumn carries more gold in its pocket than all the other seasons.”
― Jim Bishop
I grew up in 4H and during the summer I got to meet other kids from around the world. The two girls who I really remember are Pilar and Autumn. Pilar was NYC chic, and Autumn was exactly as you’d picture: dark curly hair, dark eyes, quiet, and with a sweet smile always ready to laugh. As a young girl I marveled that someone could be named after a season. Back in the ’90s it was extremely uncommon to meet another kid that had a word name. I wonder what the kids of today think about being surrounded by this as the norm. Do those names still possess that spark of interest to them?
During the fall I always can’t help but think about Apple Martin. I’ve spotted the name in use elsewhere on Instagram. I want to love it, but I still am scratching my head about it. MacIntosh, Cortland, Macoun, I get those. Still working on Apple, though. #imtrying #donthateme
I feel like October is one of the moodiest month names to me. It’s such a moody season, beginning in a burst of color and ending in a gray and brown state of rest. And if you grew up in the mountains like I did, white. It’s a month of slow fade, and so striking as a name. I love the nickname Toby/Tobi for it, for both genders.
“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”
― L.M. Montgomery,
Fall is also the season I want to see little girls named Goldie and Scarlet and Auburn. Like, seriously. This June baby wouldn’t have minded having a fall birthday with the name Goldie. Goldie Lillian? Goldie Winona? Yes, please.
This photo sums Autumn up pretty nicely:
And I mean, seriously. My son dude is the cutest with his fall birthday. Is it wrong his birthday cake one year was pumpkin pie?
If you wanted to leave a comment what your favorite season is, or your favorite thing about Autumn, I’d love to hear it!
